First ‘Russia/Eurasia – Caribbean: A New Dawn’ Forum in 2017

‘A New Dawn 2017’ is the first ever discussion platform devoted to open dialogue between representatives from Russia/Eurasia and the countries of the Caribbean Basin. The Forum will take place from November 1 to 3, 2017 in Grenada on the sidelines of the country’s chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and to mark the fact that, in 2017, Grenada became the first nation in the region to open an embassy in Moscow.
Confirmed participants in the event include delegates from Russia, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Guyana, Grenada, Cuba, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Jamaica.

The Forum venue will be a meeting place for representatives from organizations and institutions actively engaged in developing partnerships and cooperation between Russia/Eurasia and Caribbean countries, including: the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg State University, Kazan Federal University, the Skolkovo Foundation, Smolensk Kristall Diamonds, Sandals Beaches Resort, Century 21 Grenada, Bunker Capital, Koblev and Partners Law Firm, Grenada Postal Corporation, and Influence Group. Countries will also be represented by leading media organizations, in particular, from Russia – Russia 24, Izvestia, and Kommersant; and from the Caribbean – THG Network International, The Voice St. Lucia, Antigua Chronicle, BVI News, and News Room Georgetown.

The concept for the Forum was developed by the Government of Grenada, the Bering-Bellingshausen Institute for the Americas (IBBA, Montevideo, Uruguay), and the Roscongress Foundation.

IBBA and the Roscongress Foundation have previously organized joint events: between 2015 and 2017, three Latin American sessions were held at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, and in 2016 the first SPIEF regional session in the south of the New World was held in Montevideo.

As co-organizer of the Forum, the Roscongress Foundation will provide comprehensive assistance in organizing events and help to strengthen international cooperation in academia, business, and the media.

The ‘Russia/Eurasia–Caribbean: A New Dawn 2017’ Forum will offer an outstanding platform for efforts aimed at expanding and improving business interactions and developing business relationships.

A Message from The Prime Minister of Grenada

I salute the nation on this Thanksgiving Day.

For yet another year, our nation has a lot to the thankful for. We have been spared the natural disasters that rocked most of the region, and the last year has been once again marked by not just economic stability, but genuine growth.

We continue to labour in the vineyard in our fight to lift more people out of poverty and to deepen our policies that are bent on the empowerment of all.

Of course, the genesis of this Thanksgiving Day was borne out of the political upheavals of 34 years ago this week — the tragic death of a Grenadian Prime Minister and many of his supporters; a week of political fear and uncertainty and the consequent assistance by the US and Caribbean forces to quell the crisis.

We remember those times and vow to learn never to be consumed by political extremism or depart to a politics that will radically put neighbor against neighbor.

Today we once again pay tribute to all the fallen; and say thanks to our neighbors that came to us in a time of need, and we rededicate ourselves to this Grenadian nation.

To God be the glory; great things He has done!

Dr. The Right Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada

Grenada awaiting result on natural gas discovery

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — The Grenada government has confirmed the discovery of natural gas within the island’s territorial waters, but said it is still awaiting the results of tests to determine whether the gas is of a quality the island could benefit from financially.

“The findings are being tested for quality,” Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell said, adding that not all-natural gas found is of the quality required for refining.

“The finding is one thing but the quality is what will make a difference, I cannot and will not count my chickens before the eggs are hatched,” he said.

Earlier in the year, the government disclosed that it had issued a license to the Russian based Global Petroleum Group to conduct the necessary exploration activities to locate oil and natural gas within the island’s territorial waters.

In May, a notice was placed in local newspapers that dredging was being done in water south of Grenada. The marine department of the Grenada Ports Authority has confirmed that the dredging has since been completed and the ridge has departed from Grenada’s marine space.

In June, Parliament approved the Hydro Carbon Exploration Incentive Bill 2017 outlining a package of incentives for oil and gas exploration to any company.

A Trinidad and Tobago based newspaper had recently reported that oil and gas had been found by GPG close to the border with Venezuela.
